Few things are as enjoyable to me as writing humor, where the objective is so clear: to make people laugh. To write the above books for Workman Publishing (Bad Cat’s author of record is one Jim Edgar, whose cranky website inspired it), coauthors Harry Prichett and Rob Battles and I had feverish caption-writing sessions, usually in my kitchen after a takeout dinner of mediocre Chinese food. Our test for what was good enough for the book was simple: a caption had to make all three of us laugh uncontrollably. Otherwise, the Post-It on which the failed caption was written would immediately be crumpled and thrown disdainfully at its author’s head.
The books all became New York Times bestsellers, except for Bad Baby, which proved to all concerned that while people love to laugh at other people’s pets, other people’s babies—especially if they have avocado smeared on their face—are considerably less endearing.
